Start with the actual product
“Larch” is a shortlist, not a finished specification.
Larch cladding is searched as one product, but quotations can describe materially different offers. Country of origin, species, grade, usable face, knot allowance, board dimensions, moisture condition, machining and finish all affect what arrives on site.
For that reason, compare documented products rather than labels alone. A representative multi-board sample is more useful than one carefully selected offcut, and the quotation should identify finished dimensions and installed cover—not only the nominal board size.
The correct choice also depends on the building. Elevation orientation, exposure, openings, access, fixing design and the wider wall build-up belong in the project brief before a final product is appointed.
Two useful starting points
Compare larch by origin and character.
Profiles and appearance
Decide how the elevation should read.
A vertical arrangement can emphasise height, while horizontal boards can reinforce the width of an elevation. Shadow-gap, tongue-and-groove, shiplap, feather-edge, board-on-board and open rainscreen systems each create a different joint, installed cover and material quantity.
The selected profile must be intended for the proposed orientation and coordinated with battens, cavity, membrane, openings and flashings. Ask for the actual section drawing before comparing prices.
- 01State the intended vertical or horizontal orientation
- 02Confirm finished dimensions and installed cover
- 03Identify visible or concealed fixing expectations
- 04Include corners, openings, trims and length requirements
Evidence should follow the product supplied.
If responsible sourcing forms part of the brief, request the chain-of-custody claim and certificate details that apply to the actual order. PEFC explains how certified material is tracked through the supply chain. Fire, moisture, structure and regulatory requirements apply to the complete wall design; the appointed project team should check the current Approved Document B and the requirements for the particular building.
A quote that can be compared
Give suppliers the same useful brief.
Share elevation drawings or approximate dimensions, the delivery postcode, preferred larch type, profile and orientation, finish expectations, programme and any documentation required. If some decisions remain open, say which alternatives you want priced.
This creates a better basis for comparing material quantity, grade, machining, finish, accessories, delivery and exclusions—rather than choosing from a headline square-metre rate.
