Specify the grade, treatment and finish as one product.
European Redwood is the timber-trade name commonly used for imported Scots pine, principally from northern Europe. It is a workable softwood available in different grades and dimensions, but the name alone does not define an exterior cladding product. Origin, grade, visible face, finished dimensions, treatment and intended use should all appear in the quotation.
Board quality affects both appearance and machining. A selected joinery-style grade, a knotty cladding grade and a value-led mixed-length offer can produce very different elevations. Ask for a representative set of joined boards in the proposed grade, profile and finish rather than approving one carefully chosen sample.
European Redwood is particularly relevant where a preservative treatment, stain or opaque colour is central to the brief. It can provide a practical base for homes, outbuildings and commercial work, provided the supplied product, wall design, fixings and maintenance plan are suitable for the actual project.
Preservative-treated redwood
“Treated” needs a written specification.
The Wood Protection Association advises specifying preservative-treated wood by the relevant British Standard route or its commodity-code system. A quotation should identify the treatment process and intended use rather than relying on shorthand such as “tanalised”.
Confirm whether boards are machined before or after treatment, how the process affects moisture and surface condition, and what must happen to site cuts and exposed ends. Preservative treatment does not replace a drained and ventilated wall build-up, correctly detailed openings or compatible fixings.

Fire performance and regulatory suitability depend on the complete wall, building type, height and location—not the timber name alone. The appointed project team should check the current Approved Document B guidance for England and define the evidence required for the construction.
Profiles and painted finishes

European Redwood can be machined into shiplap, tongue-and-groove, shadow-gap, board-on-board and other profiles, subject to the supplier's range and product guidance. Profile names are not standard sizes. Ask for a drawing showing overall width, installed cover, thickness, joint geometry, orientation and fixing zone.
For painted or factory-coated cladding, state the preparation, primer and finish system, colour and sheen, coated faces, site touch-up product and maintenance guidance. Send the same elevations, openings, board direction, delivery postcode and programme to each supplier.
