Larch cladding is widely used on British homes, extensions, garden buildings and commercial façades because it combines a strong natural character with crisp architectural possibilities. Yet ‘larch’ is not a complete specification. Origin, grade, profile, moisture content, orientation and finishing choice all influence how the elevation looks and performs. This guide explains the main decisions clearly, so you can compare suitable products and request a more useful project quote.
Why choose larch for external cladding?
Larch is a resinous softwood with a pronounced grain and a colour palette that commonly moves through pale yellow, warm gold, pink and reddish brown. It can feel comfortably at home on a rural barn or garden room, but accurately machined boards also create the disciplined lines expected on a contemporary house, school or workplace.
Its appeal is not based on appearance alone. Correctly selected larch can provide a robust external cladding surface, although performance always depends on the complete wall design. Species and grade must be considered alongside board dimensions, ventilation, drainage, fixings, exposure and workmanship. A product name by itself is never a substitute for a project-specific specification.

UK larch or Siberian larch?
UK larch usually offers a lively, characterful face with visible knots and broader colour variation. It is particularly effective on barns, workshops, extensions and substantial practical schemes where a natural British-grown material supports the design intent. Because the visual variation is part of its character, representative samples and a clear grade description are important before ordering.
Siberian larch is associated with slow-grown timber, relatively tight grain and a cleaner architectural appearance. It has often been selected for precise shadow-gap and rainscreen profiles. However, availability, origin and documented chain of custody should be checked at the time of specification. The best choice is not simply the timber with the most polished name; it is the product whose verified source, grade and appearance match the brief.
For either option, ask the supplier to define what is included rather than comparing labels alone. Confirm the grade, usable face, expected knot content, machining tolerance, board lengths and any certification required by the project. These details make quotations meaningfully comparable.
Vertical, horizontal or board-on-board?
Vertical larch cladding is popular because it emphasises height and works naturally with modern window proportions. Narrow boards and shadow gaps produce a refined rhythm, while board-on-board arrangements create deeper shadows and a more agricultural character. Vertical systems still need a correctly designed batten arrangement that provides drainage and ventilation behind the cladding.
Horizontal layouts can make a compact building appear wider. Shiplap, tongue and groove and feather-edge profiles each produce a different joint, shadow and weathering pattern. The selected profile must be approved for its intended orientation; a board that works horizontally should not automatically be turned vertically without checking the machining and fixing guidance.
Corners, window reveals, cills, openings and the base of the wall deserve the same attention as the main board field. On a commercial elevation, these junctions strongly influence both the visual quality and the quantity of trims, labour and material required.
Does larch cladding need treatment?
Larch is often specified without a decorative coating when natural weathering is acceptable. This does not mean the façade will keep its fresh golden colour. Ultraviolet light and exposure gradually change unfinished boards towards silver-grey, and the transition may be uneven while it develops. Sheltered areas can retain warmer tones longer than elevations exposed to sun and driving rain.
If the initial colour needs to be retained, a compatible exterior coating system may help slow that visual change. It will also introduce an inspection and maintenance cycle. A pre-weathering finish is another option when the goal is a more consistent grey from the outset. Always follow the coating manufacturer’s preparation, coverage and reapplication guidance for the particular larch product.
Treatment decisions should therefore start with the desired appearance several years after installation. A low-maintenance brief may favour natural weathering, while a colour-led design may justify planned recoating. Neither route is universally better.
How long does larch cladding last?
There is no responsible single lifespan figure for every larch-clad building. Service life varies with timber quality, sapwood content, exposure, board orientation, wall build-up, moisture management, fixings and maintenance. Coastal conditions in Cornwall or Devon can create a very different exposure profile from a sheltered elevation in Bristol or Bath.
Good detailing aims to help boards dry after wetting. A ventilated and drained cavity, appropriate clearances, sound end-grain details and suitable corrosion-resistant fixings all matter. Dense planting, splashback and blocked ventilation can keep timber damp and shorten the useful life of an otherwise appropriate product.
For larger residential or commercial projects, request the technical documentation needed by the designer and contractor. Fire performance, reaction-to-fire classification, treatment compatibility and evidence of responsible sourcing may be project-specific requirements and should be confirmed rather than assumed.
What affects larch cladding cost?
Larch cladding cost is shaped by more than a price per square metre. Origin, grade, thickness, visible cover width, profile, board length and order quantity all influence the material rate. Factory coating, fire treatment, bespoke machining and special grading can add further cost, while delivery and access may be significant for a remote or large site.
Coverage is especially important. A board’s overall width is not necessarily the face width visible after overlap or interlocking, so quotations should use the installed cover rather than the nominal dimension. Allowances for cutting, defects, corners and openings also change the quantity required.
The most useful enquiry includes approximate square meterage, site location, preferred orientation, drawings or photographs, intended programme and any known technical requirements. That information allows suppliers to propose a suitable grade and profile instead of offering an attractive headline price for a product that may not fit the scheme.
A practical larch cladding checklist
Before requesting samples or prices, decide whether you want a controlled architectural face or a more expressive natural elevation. Note whether silver-grey weathering is welcome, whether a maintained colour is essential and how accessible the façade will be for future inspection.
