Why choose horizontal timber cladding?
Horizontal boards emphasise the width of an elevation. They can make a small garden room appear more generous, give a house extension a calm linear character or help a long commercial building sit more naturally within its setting. The joints also create shadow lines that change through the day as light moves across the façade.
The visual effect depends on board width and profile depth. Fine repeated lines feel precise and contemporary, while broad overlapping boards can reference traditional agricultural and coastal buildings. Combining horizontal timber with masonry, render, glazing or metal can divide a large elevation and give each part a clearer proportion.
Orientation should never be chosen from appearance alone. The exact product must be offered for horizontal external use, with a joint and fixing arrangement intended to manage rain and natural timber movement. The boards remain one visible layer within a complete drained and ventilated wall design.

Horizontal timber cladding profiles
Shiplap profiles use a rebated overlap to create a familiar weatherboard appearance. The curved or sloping face of some products produces a strong shadow line, while more restrained versions can look crisp on a contemporary building. The joint geometry and installed cover vary between manufacturers, so similar names do not guarantee equivalent boards.
Tongue-and-groove and shadow-gap profiles create a more continuous face. A tongue fits into the neighbouring groove, while a shadow-gap product forms a deliberate recess between boards. Some profiles conceal fixings and others leave them visible. Orientation, fixing zones and movement allowances should come from the guidance for the specific product.
Feather-edge boards overlap in horizontal courses and provide greater depth. They can suit barns, rural homes and characterful extensions, while accurately machined versions can also work in a controlled architectural setting. Open or slatted timber cladding is a separate rainscreen approach: visible gaps expose the backing layer and require a wall build-up designed specifically for open joints.
Choosing a timber species
Canadian cedar is often selected for refined horizontal elevations because it is relatively light and dimensionally stable, subject to the grade supplied. Its natural colour range can run from pale honey to rich brown. UK cedar generally carries more knots and lively variation, which can suit projects where home-grown provenance and a less uniform face are part of the design.
Larch creates a stronger grain and more robust visual character. UK larch works well on barns, workshops, garden buildings and larger value-conscious schemes where natural knots and colour variation are welcome. Imported larch products may have different grading and machining characteristics, so origin and specification should be confirmed rather than assumed.
Thermowood offers a consistent toasted tone and improved dimensional stability compared with its unmodified source timber. Treated European redwood and Red Grandis can suit coated or project-specific finishes. The right choice depends on appearance, grade, exposure, finish, documentation, availability and budget rather than a simple ranking of species.
Horizontal or vertical cladding?
Horizontal timber draws the eye across the building, while vertical boards tend to emphasise height. This makes orientation a useful design tool. A low extension may benefit from long horizontal lines; a compact gable or entrance may feel taller with vertical boards. There is no universal rule, and the proportions of openings and neighbouring materials matter as much as overall building shape.
Profile choice also changes the comparison. Horizontal shiplap has a different character from deep vertical board-on-board, even when the same timber is used. A narrow horizontal shadow-gap board can look more precise than a wide vertical rainscreen batten. Samples should show the intended orientation, joint and surface finish rather than only the species.
Some projects combine both directions to distinguish volumes or entrances. Changes of orientation create additional junctions and setting-out decisions, so the transition should be drawn before materials are ordered. Each profile must be suitable for its proposed direction and supported by the appropriate batten arrangement.
Cavity, battens and water management
Horizontal cladding is normally supported on vertical battens so that drainage and ventilation can continue behind the boards. The actual batten dimensions, spacing and any counter-batten requirement depend on the substrate, profile, board dimensions and complete wall design. A generic diagram should not be treated as a substitute for project-specific coordination.
The membrane behind the cavity must suit the wall and exposure. Ventilation openings, insect mesh and any required cavity barriers need to be integrated without blocking the route for water to escape. On an open-jointed system, the backing layer is more exposed and should be selected and detailed for that arrangement.
Horizontal joints should shed water in the intended direction. Rotating a profile designed for another orientation can create ledges or expose the joint incorrectly. Supplier details explain the product; the relevant designer must confirm how those details apply to the building, including interfaces with insulation, sheathing and other façade materials.
Corners, openings and board setting out
Corners can be expressed with timber or metal trims, mitred for a quieter appearance or designed as a deliberate contrasting feature. Whatever the visual choice, it needs to accommodate board depth, movement and water management. Improvised narrow strips at the end of an elevation rarely look as resolved as a corner planned with the profile from the outset.
Window and door heads, cills and reveals affect both appearance and quantity. Course lines should meet openings deliberately rather than leaving awkward cuts. Flashings need to direct water clear, and reveal details must work with the full wall depth. Setting out several courses at full size is useful before finalising cill, head and threshold positions.
Long elevations magnify small inconsistencies. Establish datum lines and check how the board module finishes at roofs, bases and changes in material. Lights, signs, vents, sockets and pipes should also be coordinated before installation so penetrations do not interrupt the intended rhythm or compromise junctions.
Fixings, movement and installation planning
Timber changes dimension as its moisture content changes. Species, grade, board width, profile and moisture condition influence that movement, so joint allowances and fixing positions should follow the selected product’s guidance. Boards need suitable storage and handling before installation, with damaged or unsuitable pieces identified before they reach the façade.
Fixings must be compatible with the timber, any preservative treatment or coating, and the site exposure. Material, length, diameter, head style and distance from board edges can affect both performance and appearance. Hidden-fixing claims should be checked against the actual profile and orientation rather than assumed from a generic photograph.
A sample area can establish workmanship, colour range, joint consistency and fixing appearance. On larger residential or commercial projects, it also gives the client, designer and installer a shared reference before hundreds of metres of board are fitted.
Weathering, coatings and maintenance
Uncoated exterior timber changes colour as sunlight and weather affect its surface. Fresh cream, gold, red and brown tones generally move towards grey, although the transition varies by elevation. Deep eaves, neighbouring buildings and orientation can leave sheltered boards closer to their original colour while exposed areas silver more quickly.
Horizontal profiles can create sheltered areas beneath laps or within shadow gaps, so weathering may not be completely uniform. That variation can be part of the natural character, but it should be discussed before an untreated finish is selected. A pre-weathered or pigmented system may be considered where a more controlled appearance is important.
A compatible coating creates inspection and maintenance requirements. Recoat timing depends on product, colour, preparation, exposure and application quality, so one universal interval would be misleading. Whether finished or left to weather, the façade should be observed for damage, failed junctions, blocked ventilation and persistent moisture traps.
What affects horizontal cladding cost?
Wall area is only the starting point for a material calculation. The profile’s installed cover, board lengths, openings, corners and cutting allowance determine the actual quantity. A nominal board width can be greater than the face it covers after the joint is formed, so comparing linear-metre prices without coverage information can be misleading.
Species, grade, finished dimensions, machining, surface texture, treatment, coating and order size all influence the supply price. The wider package may include battens, fixings, membranes, trims and delivery. Installation, access equipment and preparatory wall work should be identified separately unless the quotation clearly includes them.
For a useful comparison, ask each supplier to price the same profile, installed cover, finish and project quantities. A cheaper board can produce a higher completed cost if it requires more linear metres, extensive sorting or a different accessory package. The aim is a comparable project scope, not the lowest isolated unit rate.
Planning a South West project
