Cladding forms the visible outer face of a garden room and helps shield the layers behind it from direct weather. Choosing timber for a garden room

Thermowood provides a consistent toasted tone and improved dimensional stability compared with its unmodified source timber. Treated European redwood can be a practical base for opaque colours, while Red Grandis may suit smooth factory-coated work. Profiles and board direction
Shiplap is a familiar horizontal profile with a rebated overlap. Different versions create anything from a gentle weatherboard line to a crisp contemporary joint. Tongue-and-groove and shadow-gap boards form a more continuous face, with the profile geometry creating a deliberate recess between courses. Similar names do not guarantee the same installed cover, fixing zone or finished appearance.
Vertical timber cladding can give a garden room a taller, more architectural character. Board-on-board creates substantial depth, while a closed machined profile produces finer lines. Open or slatted rainscreen arrangements are a separate approach: visible joints expose the backing layer more directly and require a wall build-up designed for open joints.
Confirm that the exact board is offered for the intended orientation and external use. Rotating a profile can change how water meets the joint and may fall outside the supplier’s guidance. A full-width sample showing the complete joint is more useful than a narrow offcut when comparing shadow, face width and fixing appearance.
The wall build-up behind the boards
A clear route for drainage and ventilation is normally maintained behind timber cladding. The support arrangement depends on whether boards run horizontally or vertically, as well as the selected profile, substrate and complete wall design. Batten dimensions and spacing should follow the project specification and product guidance rather than a generic online diagram.
The membrane, sheathing, insulation, openings, insect mesh and any required cavity barriers need to work together. Window and door heads, cills and reveals must direct water away while preserving the intended cavity. At the base, the detail should manage splashback and allow drainage without leaving the opening unprotected.
Planning and building requirements vary with the site, building size, position, use and wider proposal. Confirm the relevant permissions and technical responsibilities before ordering materials. Corners, openings and services
