It looks straightforward, but the finished result depends on more than choosing a tapered board. Timber species, grade, board cover, overlap, fixings, wall build-up and finishing strategy must work together. What is feather edge cladding?
A feather edge cladding board is thicker along one longitudinal edge and tapers towards the other. Boards are normally installed horizontally, with the thicker edge facing down and each course overlapping the board below. This creates a stepped elevation with pronounced shadow lines and helps direct rain away from the face of the building.
The profile is closely associated with agricultural and rural buildings, but the choice of timber, board width, surface finish and detailing can make it feel either traditional or highly architectural. Wide, characterful boards suit barn conversions and workshops, while accurately machined boards with controlled grading can add texture to a contemporary home, visitor centre or hospitality project.
External feather edge boards form part of a designed cladding system rather than a waterproof wall by themselves. The substrate, membrane, battens, ventilated cavity, flashings and junctions must all be appropriate for the building and exposure.

Traditional or rebated feather edge?
Traditional feather edge boards overlap directly. The visible cover depends on the board width and the overlap required by the selected product and project. This creates a bold, crafted appearance in which small variations can add character, particularly with sawn or home-grown timber.
Rebated feather edge cladding includes a machined step that helps one board sit consistently over the next. It can create a more regular line and may simplify setting out, although the exact weathering and fixing requirements still come from the supplier’s profile guidance. Rebated and non-rebated products should not be compared on nominal board width alone because their installed cover can differ.
Surface texture also changes the result. A sawn face absorbs finishes and reflects light differently from a smooth-planed face. Ask for a representative sample in the proposed species and finish rather than judging the profile from a small generic photograph.
Which timber is best for feather edge cladding?
Larch feather edge cladding is a popular choice for projects that need a robust, strongly grained elevation. UK larch usually has visible knots and lively colour variation, making it well suited to barns, garden buildings and larger practical schemes. Imported larch products may offer different grading and machining characteristics, so origin and specification should be confirmed rather than inferred from the species name.
Cedar feather edge cladding is lighter in appearance and weight, with colour ranging from warm honey to red-brown. Canadian cedar can provide a refined face with fewer knots when an appropriate clear grade is selected, while UK cedar is generally more characterful. Both should be compared using the actual grade offered.
Other timbers may also be machined to feather edge profiles, including suitable treated softwoods and selected hardwoods. The best choice depends on desired character, exposure, maintenance expectations, technical requirements, availability and budget. For commercial work, required certification and project documentation should be identified before a product is approved.
Cladding boards are not simply fencing boards
The phrase feather edge is also used for fencing, which can make product searches confusing. A fencing board may be supplied to different tolerances, moisture conditions, grades and dimensions from a board intended for a building façade. It may not provide the consistent cover, machining quality or documentation required for external wall cladding.
Before ordering, confirm that the product is offered for the intended cladding application. Ask which face is graded for display, what knot and defect limits apply, how the boards are supplied and stored, and whether the dimensions quoted are nominal or finished. A low unit price is not useful if the product creates excessive sorting, wastage or inconsistent courses on site.
Overlap, battens and fixing considerations
The required overlap should come from the specific board profile and supplier guidance. Reducing it to increase coverage may compromise the intended joint, while excessive overlap changes quantities and the way boards sit. Setting out several courses at full scale is a useful way to confirm visible cover and the position of openings before installation begins.
Feather edge cladding is generally fixed to a suitable batten arrangement over a drained and ventilated cavity. Batten size and spacing, membrane selection, ventilation openings and cavity barriers are design matters that depend on the wall and project. Corners, cills, heads, service penetrations and the lowest course should be resolved before the main elevation is installed.
Fixings must be compatible with the timber, treatment and exposure. Their type, length, material and position should follow the board supplier’s instructions and the project specification. This is particularly important in exposed coastal parts of Devon, Dorset and Cornwall, where moisture and salt-laden air may influence material selection.
Timber movement must also be accommodated. Boards should be stored, handled and installed in line with supplier guidance, with unsuitable or damaged material identified before it becomes part of the finished façade.
Natural weathering, coatings and black finishes
Uncoated timber changes colour outdoors as ultraviolet light and weather affect the surface. Depending on species and exposure, fresh gold, cream and red-brown tones commonly move towards grey. The transition can be uneven because sheltered areas beneath eaves receive less sun and rain than open elevations.
A compatible exterior coating can influence colour and moisture uptake, but it creates an inspection and maintenance requirement. The finish manufacturer should confirm preparation, application, coverage and reapplication guidance for the exact timber and surface texture. A pre-weathered system may be considered where a more consistent grey appearance is wanted from the start.
Black feather edge cladding can be achieved through suitable factory-applied or project-specified finishes, but colour alone does not define product performance. Confirm the coating system, substrate, expected maintenance and treatment compatibility. Charred, painted and opaque-coated products are not automatically interchangeable and should be assessed on their complete specifications.
What affects feather edge cladding cost?
A meaningful feather edge cladding quote accounts for species, grade, board dimensions, installed cover, lengths, surface finish, treatment, order quantity and delivery. Trims, corners, openings, wastage and any special documentation can also affect the complete material requirement. For large elevations, small differences in visible cover can materially change the number of linear metres needed.
Avoid comparing prices solely by individual board or nominal square metre. One product may have a wider board but require a different overlap; another may include a factory finish or more controlled grading. Compare like-for-like installed specifications and confirm whether VAT, delivery, coating, fixings and accessories are included.
For the most accurate starting point, provide drawings or approximate square meterage, site location, preferred timber and finish, likely programme and any known compliance requirements. If these details are not yet available, clear photographs and a simple sketch can still help create a sensible shortlist.
Is feather edge right for your project?
Feather edge is an excellent option when the design calls for visible depth, natural variation and a profile that can bridge traditional and contemporary architecture. It works just as convincingly on a small shed or garden room as it does on a full residential elevation or commercial building, provided the timber and wall build-up are suitable.
If the aim is a very flat, tightly controlled façade, tongue and groove or a shadow-gap system may be a better comparison. Where deeper vertical rhythm is required, board-on-board cladding could be more appropriate. Samples viewed in the intended orientation make these differences much easier to understand.
