Charred timber cladding can give a garden room, extension or commercial façade a deep black finish with unmistakable texture. Yet products described as charred, burnt, blackened or Shou Sugi Ban are not necessarily made in the same way or supplied with the same evidence. What is charred timber cladding?

Charred timber cladding is wood whose visible face has been exposed to controlled heat to alter its colour and texture. Depending on the process, the surface can range from a lightly scorched brown that leaves the grain prominent to a heavily carbonised black face with a pronounced scale-like character. Some products are then brushed, oiled or otherwise finished to create a more stable appearance and handling surface.

The term is broad. Different manufacturers use different species, charring methods, brushing stages, oils and quality controls. A sample labelled simply as ‘charred timber’ therefore tells you very little about the complete product. Ask for the species, grade, finished dimensions, profile, surface process, intended orientation and technical literature attached to the exact board being quoted.

Traditional Japanese yakisugi is associated with the controlled charring of Japanese cedar boards. In the UK, names such as Shou Sugi Ban are often used more loosely for a wider family of charred finishes and timber species. If authentic method or provenance matters to the design brief, request a precise product description rather than relying on a style name.

Charred timber or black timber cladding?

Black timber cladding can be achieved in several ways. Genuine charring changes the wood surface with heat; translucent stains retain more visible grain; opaque factory coatings create a controlled colour; and some products combine charring with oil or another finishing stage. From a distance they may share a dark architectural look, but their texture, consistency, maintenance and evidence can differ.

A heavily charred face is tactile and intentionally variable. It can suit a bold feature elevation, rural conversion or hospitality building where material character is central to the design. A brushed char tends to be smoother and may reveal warm undertones. A factory-applied black coating can be a better fit where the brief calls for a repeatable colour and a clearly documented finishing system.

Compare representative samples outdoors and at the scale the elevation will be viewed. Check them in direct sun, shade and wet weather if possible. For a commercial scheme, agree an acceptable visual range and sample panel before ordering so that natural variation is understood by the design team, client and installer.

Which timber species can be charred?

Several softwoods and modified timbers are offered with charred finishes, but the base material remains important. Grain, density, knots, resin content, movement and machining characteristics influence both appearance and suitability. Products that use the same colour description can behave and look quite different when made from different timber.

Cedar is closely connected with the Japanese tradition and can produce a refined grain pattern. Larch often creates a more expressive, strongly figured surface, while thermally modified timber may be selected where a consistent substrate and dimensional stability are priorities. Other supplier-developed systems use treated softwood or alternative species. The finish should never be used to obscure what lies beneath it.

Ask whether the quoted sample represents the actual species and grade that will be supplied. Also confirm responsible sourcing evidence, moisture condition, visible-face grading and any product-specific restrictions. For a large elevation, a sample set showing normal variation is more informative than a single hand-selected board.

Profiles, orientation and façade character

Vertical black timber cladding is popular because dark boards and narrow joints create a strong rhythm and can emphasise the height of an extension or entrance. Shadow-gap and open-jointed rainscreen arrangements make the elevation feel crisp and contemporary, while board-on-board profiles create deeper relief that works well on barns, homes and larger rural developments.

Horizontal tongue-and-groove or shiplap profiles can produce a calmer, more continuous surface. The selected product must be intended for the proposed orientation and joint arrangement: a board approved for a closed horizontal system should not automatically be used vertically or with open joints. Confirm installed cover, fixing zone and the treatment of cut ends and site-made details.

Dark cladding makes junctions particularly visible. Corners, window reveals, cills, soffits, ventilation openings and service penetrations should be designed before boards arrive. The colour of membranes, cavity components and fixings may also matter where joints are open or shadow lines reveal the backing layer.

How does charred cladding weather and what maintenance is needed?

There is no universal maintenance promise for charred timber. Exposure, species, charring process, surface finish, orientation and handling all influence how a façade changes. Some products are intended to develop naturally; others use an oil or coating that requires inspection and renewal. Manufacturer guidance for the exact product should take priority over generic claims.

Weathering is rarely identical on every elevation. Strong sun, driving rain, sheltered eaves and coastal exposure can create different rates of change across the same building. In Devon, Dorset and Cornwall, exposed sites may need different consideration from a sheltered courtyard in Bristol or Bath. A design that accepts gradual variation is usually more realistic than expecting every board to remain day-one black indefinitely.

Plan for periodic visual inspections. Look for damaged or friable areas, coating change, persistent moisture traps, loose boards, blocked cavity openings and failed junctions. Cleaning, touch-up and recoating methods should be agreed with the product supplier; aggressive brushing or unsuitable chemicals can alter a textured charred face. Access for future care should be considered before a high or complex elevation is specified.

Does charring give timber a fire rating?

A charred appearance is not, by itself, evidence that a cladding product achieves a particular reaction-to-fire classification or satisfies the requirements for a specific building. Historic charring methods, decorative surface treatments and tested façade products should not be treated as interchangeable.

Where fire performance is relevant, the project team should identify the required classification and evidence for the complete specified product and intended end use. Ask the supplier for current test or classification documents that match the species, profile, dimensions, finish, substrate and fixing arrangement being proposed. Any additional fire-retardant treatment must also be confirmed as compatible with the charred finish and supporting evidence.

Building type, height, location, wall build-up and applicable regulations can change what is required. A designer, fire professional or building control professional should determine the project-specific approach. What affects charred timber cladding cost?

Cost is shaped by more than the square-metre price of a board. The base species and grade, charring process, brushing, oiling or factory coating, dimensions, profile, visible cover, length mix, order quantity and supporting documentation all influence a quotation. Heavily textured or bespoke finishes may involve more processing and careful handling than a standard coated board.

Calculate the area using installed cover rather than nominal board width. Allow for cutting waste, corners, trims, fixings, membranes, finishing of cut ends, delivery and any sample or approval panels. Complex façades with many openings can need more detailing and labour than a simple rectangular elevation, even when their net areas are similar.

Published guide prices can quickly become misleading, so a useful quote starts with the actual brief. Provide approximate dimensions or drawings, postcode, preferred profile and orientation, finish reference, programme and any known certification requirements. Photographs and a sketch can be enough for a shed or garden studio; tender information and schedules are more appropriate for a commercial façade.

A practical specification checklist

Begin with the appearance you want at installation and after weathering. Decide whether the priority is a deeply textured char, a brushed black grain or a consistent coated finish. Then compare complete products that can deliver that intent rather than selecting from colour alone.

Resolve the façade as a system. The board, cavity, battens, membrane, ventilation, fixings, flashings and openings need to work together. Request installation guidance early and make sure the installer understands how the chosen face should be stored, handled and fixed without unnecessary marking or damage.
